Forbes magazine recently reported that US employees have 1.4 billion missed days of work annually due to illness and impaired performance – an amount greater than if every nurse in the US missed a year of work. In addition to lost productivity from poor health, US employers also paid an additional $880 billion in health care benefits for employees and dependents. However, poor health is not natural.
"Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better," wrote Albert Einstein. Today, it is understood that evolution was not so much the result of a competitive struggle, but - a cooperative expression of creativity. Life has constantly reached out into novelty to adapt, innovate and regenerate. When we look deeply into nature, it’s clear that wellbeing cannot be understood in isolation. Thriving is an interrelated condition. This is the natural story of what it means to be well.
Humans, in our natural state, are meant to thrive. This is why the University of Louisville School of Public Health & Information Sciences is creating the Center for Creative Placehealing to help us realize our full, potential as a society by supporting inclusive, thriving, healthy cultures in the places where we work, live, learn, and play.
We will be launching in early 2019. To keep posted, be sure to follow us on Twitter @ULCCP #CultureShapesHealth
